When Bankside Patterson Ltd approached the task of designing and developing a set of new, leading edge chassis for the holiday home industry, the Engineering Design Centre of Industrial Collaboration (Engineering Design CIC) was on hand with practical help
Having identified the need for a stronger, stiffer, yet lighter chassis driven by an industry trend for larger, heavier caravans, Bankside Patterson collaborated with the Engineering Design CIC to develop a next generation chassis and in doing so, revolutionised Bankside Patterson’s business.
Based at the Universities of Hull and Leeds, the Centre was able to build on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Bankside Patterson and the University of Hull, to translate the knowledge of the universities into a commercial application. The company’s existing expertise was enhanced through the provision of software solutions and advanced techniques for structural strength. The concept to design analysis approach went beyond the standard prototype manufacturing and testing method, and ensured that Bankside Patterson’s status transformed from general fabricator to innovative engineering chassis specialist.
As the first cost-effective, fully corrosion resistant galvanised frame in the marketplace, Bankside Patterson’s new chassis are 15% lighter and 15% stronger than conventional designs. The new and improved product has delivered excellent results for the Beverley based firm, with
ten new jobs having been created to aid production, and sales already increasing
by £750,000 and predicted to rise to £1.5 million within a year.
